New State Budget Could Mean Decreased Funds for the U of I
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is getting ready to propose a new state budget which may decrease funds for the University of Iowa by 9%. The university could have $26 million less after the Iowa legislature approves a budget in April.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has already cut their budget by $600,000 to $700,000. The college has done this in part by leaving some faculty positions unfilled. Dean Linda Maxson said she is also considering furloughs (also known as unpaid time off). Maxson said she does not expect the federal stimulus package to change the university’s financial standing.
Iowa City Woman Charged in Child Pornography Case
Jane Doe, an Iowa City woman, was one of nine people charged Wednesday morning with child pornography charges. Those found guilty could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Iowa announced the charges which came as a result of a federal investigation in the Southern District of Iowa called Operation Wirebreaker.
Hail and Fog Cause Problems for Eastern Iowa Flights
Many flights from the Eastern Iowa Airport were delayed or cancelled on Thursday after hail and fog across Eastern Iowa forced one plane to turn around en route to Chicago.
The smoke dectector in the cargo section of another plane, an American Eagle flight, went off during its flight to Dallas. It was surrounded by fire trucks on the run way, but it landed safely with all 51 passengers unharmed. An airport spokesman said something like this is routine.

After it’s all said and done the University could have $26 million less. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has already cut their budget by $600,000 to $700,000 and the college has left some positions unfilled in order to meet goals. In order to cope with cuts, faculty members are considering furloughs.

Flights Delayed from Eastern Iowa Airport Due to Weather Conditions
Hail and fog conditions late Thursday night caused many flights from the Eastern Iowa Airport to be delayed or cancelled.
One plane had to turn around en route to Chicago because of the conditions, and another reported smoke during its flight to Dallas; however it landed safetly at the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport greeted by fire trucks on the run way. It appeared a smoke detector in the cargo section of the plane went off, which an airport spokesman said was routine.

State Budget Cutting 26 Millions Dollars from University of Iowa
IOWA CITY–Iowa Gov. Chet Culver may be proposing a new state budget in Iowa cutting 9% of funding from the University of Iowa. The budget will be approved in April and the University will be cutting positions which have not been filled and is considering furlough for University employees. A Furlough is unpaid leave which could be two to three days off of work.

IOWA-Amidst the hail and fog Thursday evening flights were delayed and canceled because of the weather conditions. Passengers were inconvenienced as the weather passed through with a flight having to turn around en route to Chicago.

Budget Cuts Hit Hard The University of Iowa Funds
The University of Iowa gets hit hard when Iowa Governor, Chet Culver, proposed a new state budget cut. The budget being approved in April foresees the University of Iowa experiencing close to a $26 million loss of funds.
Some action has already been taken to meet the goals. The university has left several faculty positions unfilled and are allowing a number of deans and/or professors to consider furloughs.

One of the nine found guilty included Iowa City resident, Jane Doe, who could potentially be faced with 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charges are to be announced Wednesday morning.
Extreme Weather Conditions Cause Airport Delays
Late on Thursday evening, numerous flights from the Eastern Iowa Airport were canceled or delayed due to extreme hail and fog weather conditions.
Various complications occurred resulting in the presence of smoke during a flight to Dallas. Fortunately, all 51 passengers landed safely at the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport.

Iowa legislature will approve the budget in April.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest in the university, has already cut their budget by $700,000. Faculty positions are being left unfilled in order to meet the goals of this cut.
Furloughs, unpaid time off, are being considered by Dean Linda Maxson, in order to cope with the new cuts. The furloughs could be up to three days long.
Plans are purely hypothetical at this point Maxson stressed. The university’s financial standing is not expected to be changed by the federal stimulus package.

A Dallas-bound American Eagle flight out of Eastern Iowa Airport reported smoke mid-flight late Thursday. The plane landed safely at the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport, surrounded by firetrucks on the runway, recovering all 51 passengers.
After inspection, it appeared that a smoke detector in the cargo section of the twin-engine plane had simply gone off during the flight. An airport spokesperson said something like this is routine, yet the horrible weather conditions that plagued Eastern Iowa that day had given both flight crew and passengers enough to worry about during the flight.

Eastern Iowa Airport Issues
Thursday’s hail and for caused delays and cancellations for many flights from the Eastern Iowa Airport, but poor conditions were not the only issues troubling the airport.
An American Eagle flight reported smoke during its flight to Dallas. A smoke detector in the cargo section of the twin-engine plane went off during the flight, signaling the trouble.
The plane landed saftely at the Dallas-Ft. Worth Internation Airport and all 52 passagengers were safe.

A new state budget proposed by Iowa Gov. Chet Culver may cause a $26 million decrease in funds at the University of Iowa. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has already cut more that $1/2 million from its budget and is preparing for more cuts by not filling all faculty positions. Another measure to cope with the cuts is to force two or three day long furloughs - unpaid time off - on employees. Dean Linda Maxson does not think that the university’s financial standing will be affected by the stimulus package. In April, the Iowa legislature will decide whether or not to approve this measure.

Poor weather condition cause travel woes
Fog and hail was the cause for several problems across Eastern Iowa on Thursday, including several delays and cancellations at the Eastern Iowa Airport. Conditions even caused a flight on its way to Chicago to turn around. On a separate American Eagle flight to Dallas, a faulty smoke detector went off forcing the plane to land at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The 51 passengers on the flight were safe although fire trucks were on the scene to provide assistance. An airport spokesman said that this was nothing out of the ordinary.

Emergency Landing from Eastern Iowa Airport flight
An American Eagle flight based from the Eastern Iowa Airport made an emergency landing due to smoke at Dallas-Ft.Worth International Airport late on Thursday. All of the flight’s 51 passengers were uninjured in the landing. Inspection revealed that the cause of the alarm was a malfunctioning smoke detector in the cargo hold.
