University of Iowa demands local business change name and color scheme.

Joe Smith, owner of The Hawkeye Hideaway, says he plans to continue to use the name and colors anyway. To require licensure, the trademarked name and colors would need to be used with an implied association to the university, which Smith says nobody would assume of his bar.

Illegal Immigrants detained indefinitey in Johnson County.

20 illegal immigrants were found in a van traveling over 80 mph on Interstate 80 between Dubuque street and Prarie du Chien road. The nationality of the men, women, and children are unknown.

Iowa City shelters have too many animals.

When the Iowa City area flooded last spring, not only were many families were forced to give up their pets or abandon them, but the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center was also under water. The shelter has worked out of the county fairgrounds and now seeks a new permanent location and more volunteers.

Van Contains More Than a Family

A van pulled over on Interstate 80 between Dubuque Street and Prairie du Chien Road contained more than just a family. 20 illegal immigrants being men, women and children, were found in the vehicle after being pulled over for speeding.

Iowa City Animal Shelter Having Hard Time Keeping Up

Abandoned pets are overflowing the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Last spring’s flood forced the animal shelter to relocate until a new permanent location could be established. Now, minimal staff is finding the numbers of animal issues to be overwhelming.

Bar May Need New Name, Colors

Hawkeye Hideaway may have to change it’s name and colors. Formal licensing is needed when using the University of Iowa’s trademark name and colors, something Hawkeye Hideway lacks.

20 Illegal Immigrants Found

Twenty illegal immigrants, were found in Iowa City on Interstate 80 between Dubuque Street and Prarie du Chien Road, after Police stopped the vehicle for speeding. Police are still gathering information as they were unsure of the nationality and their destination.

Animal Care Center Having Trouble Keeping Pace With New Arrivals

Families forced to abandon animals beacause of poor economice condtions, are finding that they have nowhere to turn with the loss of the shelter last year. The flooding has caused the shelter to be moved around quite a bit in the last year, but their working hard to find a permanent location.

University Demands Hawkeye Hideaway Change Name and Colors

University demands that unlicensed Hawkeye Hideaway bar owner Joe Smith Change the name and colors of his bar due to trademark infringement. Smith said that plenty of bars use these terms, and despite efforts by the University, he plans to continue to use the name and colors.

Illegal Immigrants found during a Routine Trafic Stop.

20 men, women and children of unkown nationality are being held by ICE. Iowa City police found them inside a van pulled over for speeding.

Animal Shelter overfilled due to flood.

Flood caused people to give up or abandon pets. The flood has also reduced the amount of space available for the pets and the number of people caring for them.

University of Iowa demand’s Iowa City bar change its name

The University of Iowa is suing the Hawkeye Bar for improper use of trademarked material, including logos and colors. Hawkeye Bar owner, Joe Smith, disputes charges, saying the material he used was commonplace.

Another troublesome bar in Iowa City under attack

Hawkeye Hideaway, a newly established bar in Iowa City owned by Joe Smith, has been asked by the University of Iowa to change the name and colors of the bar due to the assumption that people will think the bar is affiliated with the University. Hawkeye Hideaway is not a formally licensed bar yet with logos, trademarks or words implying the university have to be formally licensed but Smith is continuing to use the name and colors anyway.

Illegal Immigrants stopped by Iowa City police on Interstate 80

An Iowa City police officer pulled over a van, this morning on Interstate 80, with 20 illegal immigrants who all were unable to prove their residency and with their nationalities unknown. Immigration officials eventually came to the scene and brought the illegal immigrants of men, women and children into custody.

Staff shortage at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center

Due to the flood, which occurred last spring, the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is unable to help all animal issues within the county because of the staff shortages. The flood has left families to give up, or abandon their pets, to the animal shelter while the shelter is currently searching a new permanent location and to hopefully find more volunteers to help.

Hawkeye Hideaway under scrutiny from University of Iowa- 2nd most important

University of Iowa representatives have contacted the Hawkeye Hideaway bar in Iowa City demanding that the name and colors of the establishment be changed. Bar owner, Joe Smith, contends that several different companies use Hawkeye in their names and customers do not consider the bar connected to the University of Iowa in any way.

Van of Illegal Immigrants discovered in Iowa City -most important

Twenty illegal immigrants where discovered by police in a van driving between Dubuque St. and Prairie du Chien Road this morning. The suspects, including children, where transported to the Johnson County Jail and will remain there to be questioned.

Animal Shelter Facing Overflow-3rd most important

Flooding last spring left the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center in ruins, resulting in the relocation of the center to the county fairgrounds. These events are compounded by the increased number of families giving up pets due to economic conditions, overwhelming the staff that includes only 6 full-time employees.

A lawsuit alleges that Joe Smith, owner of Hawkeye Hideaway, knowingly infringed upon university trademarks by using the university’s “hawkeye” name and colors to promote his bar. 

Flood causes increase in abandoned animals

Flooding from the historic Eastern Iowa flood and current economic conditions are forcing many pet owners to give up their furry friends.

Hideaway owner defiant on University association dispute

An attorney for the University of Iowa, Wendy Marsh,sent a formal letter to Joe Smith, owner of Iowa City’s Hawkeyeve Hideaway demanding that he change the name and color scheme of his establishment. University officials are worried that use of the term Hawkeye and the black and gold colors will insinuate a non existent connection between the bar and the University — Smith disagrees.

Animal Shelter is out to dry after the flood

The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center has been working hard to find a permanent location and more volunteer staff after their facility was soaked by last year’s flood. Increasing number of pets in need of shelter — from flood and economic conditions — have strained the crew of only six full time employees currently operating from the temporary location at the county fairgrounds.
