Potential Local-Option Sales Tax

A potential 1 percent local-option sales tax was discussed by officials from Iowa City, Coralville, and North Libery at a public meeting last night.

The meeting was held to discuss how the potential tax would be spent. If it passes, the tax money would go to infrastructure needs, largely those that would help protect the cities from future floods.

One proposed project is relocating Iowa City’s Northwest Wastewater Treatment plant.

In Coralville, they want to build a complex levee system.

If the tax passes, it would be in effect for four years. Residents in Johnson County will vote on the L.O.S.T. May 5th.

The Hawkeye Hideaway Demanded to Change

The University of Iowa is demanding that The Hawkeye Hideaway’s name and colors are changed. The Iowa City bar, owned by Dave Moore, has been open for just over a month.

The Hawkeye name and black and gold colors are trademarked by the university. Anything with logos, trademarks or work marks with an implied association with the university have to be formally liscened.

Des Moines attorney Wenday Marsh sent a letter to Moore demanding the changes.

However, Moore has said that Iowa is known as the Hawkeye state and numerous businesses use that term in their names.

He also said no one would think the bar was associated with the university.

Moore plans on continuing to use the name and colors.
