State Budget Cutting 26 Millions Dollars from University of Iowa

IOWA CITY–Iowa Gov. Chet Culver may be proposing a new state budget in Iowa cutting 9% of funding from the University of Iowa. The budget will be approved in April and the University will be cutting positions which have not been filled and is considering furlough for University employees. A Furlough is unpaid leave which could be two to three days off of work.

Eastern Iowa Airport Cancels Flights

IOWA-Amidst the hail and fog Thursday evening flights were delayed and canceled because of the weather conditions. Passengers were inconvenienced as the weather passed through with a flight having to turn around en route to Chicago.

Iowa City Woman Charged with Child Pornography-Related Crime

IOWA CITY–An Iowa City woman was one of nine charged in a case involving child pornography Wednesday morning.  The charges were a result of a federal investigation in the Southern District of Iowa called Operation Windbreak.The charges may result in a 10 year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

Child Pornography in Southern Iowa

Jane Doe is one of nine people charged with child pornography-related charges in Southern Iowa.

Those found guilty could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A federal investigation in the Southern District of Iowa called Operation Wirebreaker. The United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Iowa announced the charges Wednesday morning.

Governor Chet Culver Ready to Propose New State Budget

Iowa Governor Chet Culver is preparing to propose a new state budget that will decrease funds for the University of Iowa by 9%. This could amount to a total of $26 million less for the university.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has already cut their budget by $600,000 to $700,000.

Dean Linda Maxson is considering furloughs to cope with the proposed cuts. The furloughs could be two or three days long. Maxson stressed that it is hypothetical.

The Iowa Legislature will approve a budged in April.

Weather Problematic at Eastern Iowa Airport

Many flights were canceled or delayed because of hail and fog at Eastern Iowa Airport.

One flight had to turn around en route to Chicago because of the conditions.

“This was routine procedure,” an airport spokesman said.

The budget will cut funds for the University of Iowa by 9%.  This could total $26 million less for the UI and some departments are already cutting their budgets.

Nine Face Child Pornography Charges

A federal investigation in the Southern District of Iowa has produced nine child pornography charges.  The United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Iowa announced the charges wednesday.

Among those charged was Jane Doe, an Iowa City woman.  If found guilty she and the other eight could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Weather Inconveniences Eastern Iowans

Hail and Fog across Eastern Iowa late in the day Thursday has caused a lot of grief.  Several flights from the Eastern Iowa Airport were delayed or cancelled.

The cancellations came after a flight on its way to Chicago was forced to turn around due to the nasty weather.
